My Studio

278 Highbury Grove, Cosham, Portsmouth, PO6 2RX
My newborn sessions take place in my little home studio. The room is small and cosy but it has everything I need to capture some beautiful portraits of your precious bundle. Due to the size of the room I do kindly ask only Mum and Dad attend the session with baby. (Siblings are welcome to join however if they are quite little I do advise that once their photos have been taken (I do these first) somebody is able to collect them as a long newborn session is understandably very tedious for little ones, especially in my little studio room! They are welcome to stay however if you'd prefer. I keep my studio pretty toasty to ensure baby is warm enough to stay sleepy and content, especially as they spend some of the session unclothed. Please keep this in mind when dressing for your session so that you don't feel too warm!
Preparing baby and what to bring

The aim of a newborn session is for baby to be relaxed and sleepy. Saying this, if baby does decide they want to wake up for a portion of their session Im always happy to capture natural awake shots and let baby take lead. Sleepy poses however do require a calm and sleepy baby so I advise giving it your best shot at keeping baby alert prior to the shoot (but please dont stress, this is easier said than done with newborns!) Sometimes a bath or lots of stimulation in a bright room can help. You can either feed your baby before you leave or upon arrival (or both if baby is a little milk monster!). Please note my studio is completely breastfeeding friendly so please do not feel you have to express before coming or cover up (unless of course you want to!). I want you to feel totally comfortable here. It is always a good idea to bring baby along in a nice loose outfit such as a popper baby grow with no vest underneath just to avoid waking baby up too much when undressing if baby is asleep upon arrival. In regard to what to bring there really is not very much you need as I supply everything for the session itself. Please just make sure you have lots of milk at the ready (baby may need more little top up feeds than they usually would at home just to soothe them between props and poses), a dummy is also really handy for newborn sessions as it provides suckling comfort whilst I am moving baby into different poses, even if they don't usually use one (however this is of course parents preference!) and anything else you would usually pack in your changing bag . Food and drink is welcome in the studio also so don't be afraid to bring along a coffee (caffeine is a lifesaver in those early days) or on the go late breakfast ha!

If you are bringing anything along with you to the session that you want included in your session please let me know prior to your session.
Your Session

My newborn sessions are mostly led by baby (if they need to stop and feed or have a cuddle etc that is fine, if baby really hates being in a certain pose I switch it up, if baby hates being posed at all I swaddle baby and capture more natural shots) however I do have somewhat of a workflow with my sessions. I will usually begin with parent/sibling photos. I will then usually move onto prop shots of baby. This is the main part of my session, I love photographing babies wrapped up in baskets with beautiful fabrics and sweet headbands. These images are followed by poses on the beanbag/posing table. I mostly aim for images of baby in sweet, simple poses with fabrics to cover their nappy along with some natural shots capturing little ones features. I don't include fully naked baby poses into my newborn sessions unless requested by parents.
What should I wear?
My parent/family images are headshots and siblings will have some shots that feature their whole body with baby. Neutral coloured clothing is advised, a loose boho style dress or blouse is beautiful for Mum, or even a tshirt or shirt. A neutral button up shirt or tshirt works well for Dad and same goes for siblings. Neutrals and textured fabrics such as knits, lace, embroidered etc look beautiful in images and I would also advise avoiding busy patterns and large logos and designs.

During your session I want parents to mostly sit back, relax and watch their beautiful new baby be posed for their photos. Ive spent LOTS of time with new babies every week for the last 8+ years (along with having my own babies) so Id like to think Im quite well practiced with keeping little ones sleepy, content and most importantly safe. Occasionally I may need a helping hand with a pose (to hold babies head in place whilst I photograph) but I will let you know if and when that time comes, and of course sometimes babies need a snuggle or feed with their Mummy or Daddy to help settle them also.
Your session is booked out for up to 3 hours however on average they usually take no longer than 2. That extra hour is there just incase we need it.
Baby has arrived + after your session

As you know my sessions are booked in by due date and I only take a limited number a month. When your baby arrives please email me with the subject BABY IS HERE so I can spot it right away. I do need you to contact me ideally within 48 hours of baby being born so that I can get you booked in as soon as possible. Babies ideally need to be photographed between 5-21 days of life however I can accommodate for extended hospital stays or any other medical issues, please just let me know if this is the case (prem babies stay sleepy for longer and full term babies will usually be sleepy enough for the first 4 weeks).
Once your session slot is booked in I will send you over a client form to fill out so that I can take some extra info from you prior to your session.
After your session I will get to work on editing your gallery. I aim to produce roughly 50 beautiful, fully edited images from your session. Turn around to receive your gallery proofs is around 2 weeks (sometimes a tiny bit more, often less, it all depends on how busy that week has been for babies). You will receive a link to a password protected online digital gallery where you can view watermarked versions of your photos. After viewing you can decide on your newborn package. Pricing has changed in 2025 so if you are booked in prior to this date and need me to remind you of the old pricing pop me a message and I will send over the old price list.
I will then enable your images to be downloaded unwatermarked from your client gallery. These images can be downloaded to all of your devices.
Images you receive in these packages are digital files, I do not offer prints however I can point you in the right direction of some great printing companies if you would like!
If you have any further questions prior to your session please pop me an email and I will get back to you as soon as I can! I wish you a smooth rest of your pregnancy and I can't wait to hear from you when sweet new arrival is here! Rosie
